Born in Tallapoosa County, reared in Coosa County by his grandmother, Ann Jordan; educated at the United States Naval Academy. A pioneer in the generation of electricity throughout the world, his engineering and financial knowledge provided many of the guidelines for the production of the electric power we take for granted today. Born here Jan. 1, 1858, a graduate of the Naval Academy in 1879, he commanded the USS Cushing in the War with Spain. In 1917 took command of the Cruiser and Transport Force, U.S. Navy, which convoyed Allied troops to France without the loss of a man. In 1919 was commander-in-chief, Asiatic Fleet. He held the Distinguished Service Medal, Japanese Order of Sacred Treasure, 1st Class, Chinese Order of Weng Hu, 1st Class, and French Legion of Honor. He died Jan. 6, 1937. Display # 11 - 12 of 12 |
