Virginia Department of Historic Resources Established in 1927 and one of the oldest in the nation, Virginia's historical highway marker program is administered today by the Department of Historic Resources. Local governments, private organizations, or individuals can propose and sponsor new markers, which cost $1,350 to manufacture. (There may be an additional fee to cover installation expenses in certain jurisdictions.) Each marker's content must be approved by the Board of Historic Resources, which convenes quarterly during the year. The Virginia Department of Transportation maintains the signs once they are installed. |

Captain Salem Avery House Museum The Captain Salem Avery House was built c. 1860 on the Banks of the West River in Shady Side, Maryland. The Shady Side Rural Heritage Society, Inc. purchased the waterfront property in 1989 as a center to help preserve the social history of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The Society is active in the community by sponsoring educational and social activities, lecture series, and many other events. Calculating the Distance Between two GeoPoints This script calculates great-circle distances between the two points – that is, the shortest distance over the earth’s surface – using the ‘Haversine’ formula.
It assumes a spherical earth, ignoring ellipsoidal effects – which is accurate enough* for most purposes… – giving an ‘as-the-crow-flies’ distance between the two points (ignoring any hills!). |
