Community originally known as Hacker Lick for John Hacker and salt spring he found here in 1772, following a buffalo trail on land he claimed by "tomahawk mark" in present Webster, Upshur, and Lewis counties. Killed buffalo cow at site. A post office operated 1856-1892 as Hacker's Valley, when (') dropped. Name used for local Methodist church, tax district and geographical quadrangle. Conrad & Anderson families came later.
