Established in 1848, it was incorporated as the Wheeling Female Academy in 1852. Founded by the Sisters of the Visitation and the Right Rev. R. V. Whelan, Bishop of Richmond, to educate Catholic women, the academy moved to this location and main building in 1865. Placed on National Register in 1978, it is open to students of all denominations.
