The gleaming crest of Mount Baker, impressive northern buttress of the Cascade Range rises skyward to the lofty elevation of 10,750 feet. It's Indian name "Hulshan" means steep lieutenant. Joseph Baker, Vancouver's valiant officer, sighted the snowy eminence from far out toward the sea on April 30, 1792 and the captain of the expedition named it in his honor.
