A short distance to the south on the Walla Walla River at Wai-I-Lat-Pu, meaning "The Place of Rye Grass" is the site of a mission established by the Revered Doctore Marcus Whitman and hist courageous wife, Naricissa. Faced with hardships in this new land, they brought the religion of the white man to the Indians and sought to teach them and administer to their ills until, during a period of Indian suspicion and skepticism, on the afternoon of November 29, 1847, Doctor Whitman and his wife with a number of others were massacred by Cayuse Indians.
