Naval Air Station Norfolk was commissioned August 8, 1918 and is the birthplace of naval aviation. NAS Norfolk intially provided support for operational and experimental flights but quickly grew into a major sea plane base. World War II brought a renewed interest in shipboard operations and NAS Norfolk began developing and testing catapult and arresting gear systems for the Navy. Additionally, NAS Norfolk began to provide anti-submarine patrols to clear the vital seaways of the Mid-Atlantic seaboard. Keeping pace with Naval Aviation, NAS Norfolk became one of the foremost air stations int he world and Chambers Field is one of the world's busiest airports conducting over 119,000 flight operations per year. Naval Air Station Norfolk was disestablished on February 5, 1999. Chambers Field continues to operate as a detachment of Naval Air Station Oceana. Gate 3, Norfolk Naval Base Norfolk City Virginia.
