Norfolk's first newspaper, The Virginia Gazette or Norfolk Intelligencer, was put out of business when its press was seized by British troops near this spot on September 30, 1775. The editor, John Hunter Holt, who had defied Governor Dunmore, then volunteered for service in the Revolutionary Army. He died in Richmond June 8, 1787.
