William M. Tuck was born near High Hill, Halifax County, Virginia. After service in the U.S. Marin Corps in World War I, he attended the College of William and Mary and earned a law degree from Washington and Lee University. Governor Tuck served three terms in the Virginia House of Delegates, followed by service in the Virginia Senate (1932-1942) and as Lieutenant Governor (1942-1946). As Governor of Virginia (1946-1950), Governor Tuck worked for passage of Virginia's Right-to-Work Act. Tuck served in the United States House of Representatives from 1953-1969.
