Colonel Thomas Lygon, who came to the Virginia colony in the early 1640s from Worcestershire, England, patented several large parcels of land on the north bank of the Appomattox River in an area known as the Cowpens, near Mount My Lady, which was then part of Henrico County. It is likely that he lived here in this area with his wife Mary Harris and their five children. Lygon served in the House of Burgesses from Henrico County in 1656, as a colonel in the county militia, and as a surveyor of the county until his death in 1675.
