The U.S. War Department aqquired much of the Belvoir tract in 1912 as a training center and in 1917 named it Camp A.A. Humphreys, a former Chief of Engineers. During World War I the camp was enlarged and the Engineer School moved there. The camp was renamed Fort Humphreys in 1922. In 1935, President Franklin D. Rooseveldt changed the name to Fort Belvoir.
