Do You Know?

I was so common that one recorded nesting ground covered more than 800 square miles and contained over 100 million of us. Yet I am extinct today. My name comes from the Indian word meaning "wanderer".

Do you know who I am?

Welcome
What is important to us about our history is communicated in many ways. Books, newspapers, radio and television are all media that both reflect and convey our sense of history. However, in the United States what is important to us about things that happened and their significance is clearly reflected in the various markers that punctuate our highways. Each one beckons us to pull over, take in a piece of history, and consider the landscape that in past days hosted events so significance that our fathers have chosen to give of their time and money to place a lasting remembrance.

The purpose of this site is to catalog and promote these remembrances.

This is done by recording the text and location of each marker by state. Where possible, we also display a picture of the marker or the history it commemorates. Finally, we provide homage to the significance of these markers by providing feeds to your desktop and random content that can freely be embedded in your web sites. The goal is simply to help get out the word and encourage each of us more fully appreciate our heritage.
