Emmanuel Baptist Church grew out of early worship services shared with local Methodists and Presbyterians. In 1907, under the support and guidance of Houston's First Baptist Church, eighteen charter members organized this congregation. Soon thereafter, members built a sanctuary. In 1908, the young church joined the Union Baptist Association. The congregation has a long history of outreach and community involvement. In 1952, it established the Prairie Gardens mission, which later became a fully organized church. By the 1970s, Emmanuel Baptist focused much of its energy on children and youth programs. The congregation has also contributed to many outreach efforts, particularly for churches and missions in New York, Indiana and New Jersey. Additionally, it has commissioned members for full time foreign missionary work. Emmanuel Baptist Church has changed its focus and programs through the years to serve the local community in new ways. By the late 20th century, it made plans to work closely with the area's Hispanic population. In 1993, members of Jezreel Baptist Church, a Hispanic congregation, voted to disband and join in service with Emmanuel Baptist Church. Today, Emmanuel Baptist Church remains a spiritual leader in Houston. Through community involvement and outreach to others with programs spanning two centuries, the historic institution continues to make lasting contributions to those it serves.
