American painter, noted for his portraits of George Washington. Here, Peale opened in 1786 his museum of art & natural science. This he moved to Philosophical Hall, 1794; to Independence Hall, 1802 Founder, Peensylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Burial a block away.
