PRESENTED TO THE CITY OF ST. LOUIS BY THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE EXPOSITION COMPANY IN COMMEMORATION OF THE UNIVERSAL EXPOSITION OF 1904 HELD ON THIS SITE.
[HISTORY:This statue of the Crusader King Louis IX of France was the emblem of the city, appearing on most official documents and the city flag, but now it shares its prominence with the Gateway Arch. The Crusader King Louis IX of France is a symbol of Christianity, the Crusading spirit, and the strength and vitality of the City of St. Louis. The original staff (plaster of Paris and fibers) version of this statue stood at the main entrance gate of the 1904 World's Fair, where the Missouri History Museum (formally the Jefferson Memorial) is now located. Cast later in bronze, the statue was unveiled in 1906. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition Committee decided to have the sculpture cast and presented to the city as a part of the restoration of Forest Park after the Fair.]
