Bakersfield Missouri info plaque. In 1818, Geologist Henry Schoolcraft, exploring White River Country met a hunter in this vicinity who told of th are being called Bennett's bayou and of scattered settlements. in 1830's pioneers, mainly southerners, settled here. Growth, halted by the Civil war resumed in late 1860's. in 1873 a post office was opened.. the town is named for a pioneer. James A. Baker. In 1900 Bakersfield, a popular service center for travelers, had a population of 400. the town was incorporated in 1967.
