Nicholas A. Inman, a blacksmith, moved from the mountains of Tennessee to the area of Nixa in 1852. He moved his equipment by ox team from St. Louis, MO. While Inman fought in the Civil War and carried wagons of fruit and vegetables into Springfield to supplement his income, other families moved in nearby.

The Stewart buildings were at a crossroads and this site was selected for a Post Office. The Post Office required a name so a town meeting was called. They wanted a short name and when Nicholas walked into the meeting, someone offered to name it after him for his many years of service to the community. A voice said "NIX" best described the site since it was "nothing but crossroads." They said 'A' from Inman's middle initial and thus came the name "NIXA".
