On Oct. 23, 1838, about 800 Potawatomi Indians camped near here on the forced removal from Indiana to Kansas. They camped at Thomas' encampment. Having marched 10 miles after ferrying the Grand River. Wet bottom lands and severe cold made the march miserable. Over 40 Indians died on the Trail of Death. Erected 1999 by the Dewitt Community Youth Group and Dewitt Community Club. 7th St. & Jefferson St., De Witt Community Club lawn, De Witt, Carroll County Missouri
