[The Marine Detachment consisted of less than 50 members and operated as part of the Gunnery Division in most warships. For the most part, a Marine's tour at sea was about two (2) years even in wartime, after which he served shore duty or with the "Mud Marines". Today (Sept. 2008), only 4 World War II Marines survive.] Presented by the United States Seagoing Marine Association. Additional information provided by Robert Vanderveen of the USMC Seagoing Association. Fore St. & Eastern Promenade, Fort Allen Park, Portland, Cumberland County Maine
