In 1827, Richard Gilbert opened a commercial limestone quarry three quarters of a mile south on Jack's Defeat Creek. Stinesville's oolitic limestone, desirable as building stone, was used in several Indiana courthouses and Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Indianapolis. Limestone industry has been major economic factor in area. Erected 1996 Indiana Historical Bureau and Danny Phelix Jacobs.
