Side one:
Responding to growing African-American population and exclusion from city YMCA, black leaders formed Young Men's Prayer Band 1900. Band recognized by state YMCA 1902; became branch of city YMCA by 1910. Donations funded new building at Senate Avenue and Michigan Street; opened 1913; Booker T. Washington dedicated. Faburn DeFrantz led it 1916-1951.
Side two:
Senate Avenue YMCA became center for black community involvement, social activism, and education. Monster Meetings, begun 1904, into 1950s featured national leaders, such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Eleanor Roosevelt. Indianapolis YMCA integrated 1950. Needing space, Senate Avenue branch moved to Fall Creek Parkway 1959.
