A brilliant and rare example of Romanesque architecture, this monumental limestone structure was constructed by the U. S. Treasury Department, which begun 1867-completed 1872, for a costly $225,000. It is one of the few remaining works of noted government architect A. B. Mullet. The Custom House is currently under renovation. Within the Custom House is now a museum, and included are article from the Tigress. The Tigress, a river packet commandeered by the Union Army, and placed into service as Ulysses S. Grant's flagship. It carried Grant up the Tennessee to the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. A year later, the Tigress was sunk while running the shore batteries at Vicksburg. A Civil War Cannon, a Monument to York, William Clark's slave and fellow traveler on the Corps of Discovery. A monument to another fellow traveler, Seaman, also graces the front lawn. The Custom House was placed on the national Register of Historic Places.
