Welcome

What is important to us about our history is communicated in many ways. Books, newspapers, radio and television are all media that both reflect and convey our sense of history. However, in the United States what is important to us about things that happened and their significance is clearly reflected in the various markers that punctuate our highways. Each one beckons us to pull over, take in a piece of history, and consider the landscape that in past days hosted events so significance that our fathers have chosen to give of their time and money to place a lasting remembrance. The purpose of this site is to catalog and promote these remembrances.

This is done by recording the text and location of each marker by state. Where possible, we also display a picture of the marker or the history it commemorates. Finally, we provide homage to the significance of these markers by providing feeds to your desktop and random content that can freely be embedded in your web sites. The goal is simply to help get out the word and encourage each of us more fully appreciate our heritage.

Chief Editor, Historical Marker Society of America

The future is Here!

Welcome to our new site. And to help celebrate we have changed our name. We are now The Historical Marker Society of America. And a society we are, composed of many like minded folk who appreciate American History and the reflection of that history along our streets and highways.

And, we are continually remaking ourselves. As we do, I would encourage each of you to follow our development. Features of our new site include:

  • A New How-To Menu
  • Faster, more intuitive access.
  • A new crisp, clear look and feel.
  • The addition of State Editors.
  • A more user friendly ability to add and update markers.
  • Other improvements as suggested by you, our loyal user community.

Many thanks to each of you who have supported HistoricMarkers.com over the years! We simply provide a placeholder for your hard work. You are the reason that more than 17,000 people visit each month.
