What is important to us about our history is communicated in many ways. Books, newspapers, radio and television are all media that both reflect and convey our sense of history. However, in the United States what is important to us about things that happened and their significance is clearly reflected in the various markers that punctuate our highways. Each one beckons us to pull over, take in a piece of history, and consider the landscape that in past days hosted events so significance that our fathers have chosen to give of their time and money to place a lasting remembrance.
Click on map to select markers for a given State.
The purpose of this site is to catalog and promote these remembrances.
This is done by recording the text and location of each marker by state. Where possible, we also display a picture of the marker or the history it commemorates. Finally, we provide homage to the significance of these markers by providing feeds to your desktop and random content that can freely be embedded in your web sites. The goal is simply to help get out the word and encourage each of us more fully appreciate our heritage.

"Tagging" is a term used to describe human indexing of material on the Web, which in theory makes content more intuitively found and shared. Tagging systems are also known sometimes as "folksonomies"--a combination of "folk" and "taxonomy"--as well as "shared bookmarking." The way it works is simple.....
At the end of each article there is a list of Tags for that article. There is also the ability to suggest additional tags by clicking on the link: Add more tags... A box will open where you can enter your suggestion for a tag. A tag should be an exact phrase from the article (or it's title). Once you tag an article the tag will become immediately available. Each night a program will run that will tag every marker that has the same tag you entered. However, tags which appear less than 5 times or greater than 500 times will be removed. All public tags appear in the site index. This index can be accessed from the main menu. For more information check out Tag FAQS
